As an epilogue to the chicken story, I thought I’d post a link to an
article in the New York Times about the geese living Central Park. Apparently, there are so many of them at a pond at the northern end of the park that they have begun to invade the surrounding neighborhood. A couple of weeks age, long before she found the chicken, my mother was walking down 110th street, on her way from another school. While walking, she noticed that a goose was waiting for the bus at a local bus stop.
The bus did come, but before the goose was able to board an old man shooed it back in the direction of the park. Upon realizing that my mother was watching, he commented “loco,” to her by way of explanation and did the obligatory circular motion with his fingers around his head. In case you were curious, unlike chickens, geese in New York DO cross the street. This particular goose had crossed a few to get to the bus stop, only to find that residents were not willing to let it on the bus. Discrimination?
